Elderly couple seek permission to end their lives

On 11 May 2013, Times of India (Ahmedabad edition) reported the story of an elderly couple who sought permission from authorities to end their lives:

Fed up with their hellish life, an elderly couple, Bhau Das Gridhari Balda (64) and his wife Leela Balda (63) on Friday submitted a written application to the city collector for permission to end their lives.

“We are completely helpless. Our life is one of constant abuse at the hands of our son and daughter-in-law. We want death,”says the couple.

The elderly couple first approached the Meghaninagar police and gave a written complaint but nothing was done. Later they gave a written complaint to the SDM in February last year. But their complaint again fell on deaf ears. They even filed an RTI application to know the status of their complaint but no answer was given by authorities.

Bhau Das and his wife ran from pillar to post for action on their complaint. Their son and daughter-in-law continued to ill-treat them. Finally, fed up with their son’s ill-treatment on Friday they made an application to the Collector.

Collector’s office has received the complaint and forwarded it to the police. It has also asked to take action against their son Manish and daughter in-law under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act.
