498A The Wedding Gift – Misuse of anti-dowry law

One of the most abused provisions of law, the most misused, and the one with far reaching ramifications on institution of marriage – Section 498A of Indian Penal Code – has found a new media to educate the masses and government alike on the need to review the said provision of law.

Recently, director Suhaib Ilyasi’s film ‘498A – The Wedding Gift’ was screened in the capital. The film is about the misuse of the IPC section 498A – the dowry law. Suhaib said, “Section 498A is the need of the hour but it is so handy that it is being used wrongly. If a woman is not happy with her marriage, she tries to take her in-laws and husband to court through this law. Delhi has a racket where girls marry rich industrialists and later use section 498A to take money from them.”

A poignant scene from the movie…
